Lib Dems choose Vicki Harris for Westminster again12.00.00am UTC (GMT +0000) Tue 5th Dec 2006
Vicki Harris has been re-selected as the Lib Dems Westminster candidate for the Aberdeen South constituency. In 2005 Vicki cut Labour's majority in the seat by two thirds, making Aberdeen South one of the most winnable seats in the UK for the Lib Dems. She only needs a 1.6% swing to win next time. Vicki is a project manager with a background working for overseas development charities. She worked for Aberdeen South MSP Nicol Stephen before moving on to work as a political campaigner. Vicki Harris said, "I am delighted to have been given another chance to campaign on the issues that people in Aberdeen South care about. I'm looking forward to working with Nicol Stephen MSP and the outstanding Aberdeen South team to win the Westminster seat for the Lib Dems. "The Scottish Liberal Democrats are increasingly seen as the party of the future - the only party with clear plans for fairer and greener taxes. We want to tax pollution not people. Climate change is the UK's greatest challenge. We are determined to make the green switch with renewables supplying 100% of Scotland's energy by 2050. In Aberdeen we have achieved the green switch to recycling under the Lib Dems, with recycling rates already up to 24%. "It's become clear over recent months with the growing crisis in Iraq that people in Aberdeen South remain deeply unhappy with the Labour government at Westminster. "The success of the Lib Dems in the Dunfermline by-election earlier this year shows that we are the only party with growing momentum." Roy Thomson, Convenor of Aberdeen South Liberal Democrats said, "There was short list of 5 members for this candidacy and Vicki was the clear winner of the ballot. The interest shown by many Aberdeen South Liberal Democrat members in this candidacy, as well as record numbers of people wishing to become council candidates augurs well for the future of Liberal Democrats in Aberdeen South." "Vicki Harris very nearly won the Westminster seat last time and showed that she is a formidable campaigner. We are delighted to see her given the opportunity to fight the seat again and have no doubt that she will win whenever the Westminster General Election takes place."
